Toto Asia: A Simple Definition

The Band Toto Asia

Toto was expanding its production facilities overseas and operating in France, Germany, Indonesia, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and the People's Republic of China. Toto saw North America as a growth market for Washlet bidet seats and toilets, as opposed to its "base" markets of Japan and China.

Dhaniram Toto was recording Toto words to ensure that the next generation would be able to read them. Many words were substituted with foreign ones. For instance dui, which was Bengali for verandah, was being used.

Origins

Incorporated in 1917, Toto's early years mirrored Japan's economic development. In the first half of 1917, Toto produced products to meet the growing demand for modern, contemporary urban housing. It had the first tunnel kiln in the country to produce ceramics continuously. It also pioneered the use of automation for production control, which allows for greater efficiency and consistency.

In the late 1980s the company began expanding outwards to take advantage of sales and new markets. The company founded the Cera Trading Company to import and market other products of other manufacturers to enhance its own line of sanitary earthenwares as well as plumbing fittings. This strategy helped to increase sales and expand the firm’s global market share.

In the 1990s, Toto had shifted its emphasis to research and development of household appliances that are water-related. It also upgraded its distribution system to better serve the needs of its customers and to increase profits. The company adopted a just-in-time approach to managing its supply chain and used the same method in its sales program. This resulted in a greater degree of customer satisfaction.

Toto continued to develop toilet technology. Its latest toilet has a powerful, environmentally-friendly tornado flush. Toto uses recycled water for its manufacturing process and also has a green purchasing policy. Apart from toilets, Toto manufactures faucets and bathtubs and hand dryers that are more efficient in terms of energy consumption than standard models.

The first Toto museum opened in 2015. It hosts exhibits on Toto’s seminal products as well as their evolution, group companies (all of which are made of ceramics), the history of plumbing, and even bath units. In a separate gallery you will find Toto products sold all over. The museum also has a bathroom with a WASHLET as well as other toilet innovations.

Before forming Toto members of the group performed sessions with various musicians. Boz Scaggs album Silk Degrees featured keyboardist David Paich, guitarists Mike Porcaro & Steve Lukather as well as drummer Jeff Porcaro & Steve Lukather. They also played on records by Steely Dan, Seals and Crofts, and Sonny and Cher.

Discography

With a name as evocative as Asia one would think that the group would be prog queens and kings but they're actually a pretty straight forward rock group. The group began as a group and released two albums - 1979's self-titled debut album, and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. The group has a wide musical background but their biggest success was in 1982 with Toto IV.

The album was a huge blockbuster, but not without its share of problems. Record companies put the band on the spot with the ultimatum "give us an album that is a success or we'll drop you" and the pressure was on to meet the deadline. Luckily for Toto they delivered, with the help of the smash hit single "Africa."

Toto's musical mastery is due to their previous experiences in the music industry, as the band members had been session musicians for artists such as Boz Scaggs, Steely Dan, and Seals and Crofts prior to forming the group. Their distinctive sound has since become the standard for  pop music from the 1980s, and has influenced many contemporary artists.

The album begins with a hefty dose of hard rock with songs like Running Out of Time and Unknown Soldier showcasing the bands ability to write fantastic AOR songs that slowly build their hooks into your mind. However, the album also includes some more mellow, jazzy tracks like The Little Things and Chinatown. The album closes with Great Expectations, a song that combines folk with distorted AOR and should sound like a complete flop, but is incredibly effective.

After Toto IV The band's fortunes took a turn for the worse. David Hungate left to concentrate on his solo career and the band had to go through numerous drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball was fired from the band in the wake of drug charges and the group continued to perform as a trio, which included Michael Porcaro and Steve Lukather.

Despite the turbulence, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation, which was not as successful as IV. The band managed to release an album that topped the charts, Kingdom of Desire, in 1992. This album marked the conclusion of the original Toto lineup and was also the first album featuring a new singer, Simon Phillips.

Line-up

Turn Back, the band's third studio album it was an ode to the classic sextet structure, and it was a more consistent, more powerful effort that had a more grittier edge. The edgier sound of Turn Back reflected the development of the group. Bobby Kimball's growing ability to play was evident in the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. David Paich's work was more refined, sharper and less cloned previously recorded recordings.

After touring to promote the album, the group recorded a live performance in Amsterdam which was released as a two-CD set titled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released a brand new studio album a few months later, and went on a tour around the world to support the album. During this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started exploring old tapes and demos for a new record featuring songs that were never recorded before. The album was released in 2001 and released as a double album titled Then & Now. It was the first album in the band's history that did not include any single song that had the word "A" in the title, and it also contained one previously not released track, "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial flop and the vocalist Williams was suffering from a serious laryngitis condition which limited his singing capabilities. In addition, Hungate returned to Nashville, while drummer Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.

Downes along with the other original members of Asia - Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened an event in England in early 2006 to discuss the possibility of restructuring the band. This lineup, minus Howe who was working with Yes during that period, was later renamed Toto XIV. They toured extensively.

In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The band also featured an appearance by singer Michael McDonald, and a backing singer named Mabvuto Carpenter.
